RECs

Renewable Energy Certificates

According to the EPA, “A REC (pronounced: rěk) represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other nonpower qualities of renewable electricity generation. A REC, and its associated attributes and benefits, can be sold separately from the underlying physical electricity associated with a renewable-based generation source.”

That’s quite a lot of verbiage to digest… In essence what you need to know is that for all renewable electricity generators tied to the grid, one REC is created for every 1000 kilowatt-hours (or 1 megawatt-hour) of electricity produced. The REC holds the attributes and benefits of the renewable electricity, but the electricity itself is maintained on the grid.

By purchasing a REC, you earn the right to claim that you are supporting renewable energy development when green power products are not locally available or are currently cost prohibitive for your company. RECs can be from various renewable energy locations across the country and from specific sources like 100% wind or 100% solar.

But WHY purchase RECs?

  • Meet government renewable energy requirements/regulations
  • Green the electricity used in your business operations
  • Lessen the negative environmental impact from your company’s use of non-renewable energy sources
  • Provide a clear message of your company’s commitment to clean energy production

Why our RECs are Green-e Energy Certified

Our RECs are purchased from Community Green Energy and are Green-e Energy Certified which tells you that every last megawatt-hour of RECs sold must be accounted for: who sold them, who purchased them, and where were they generated. Green e-Energy Certification ensures that your REC is protected from fraud and duplicate sales – that you are the one and only owner of that REC.
